But the one without the other is unsustainable. They need eachother. A manager who cannot achieve the leadership side will ultimately fail, as will the leader who cannot achieve the management side. So maybe it is ALL about leadership…
Leaders need to be balanced between traditional “push” (e.g. traditional “transformational” leadership, or command and control etc) and “pull” (e.g. being able to coach and knowing how and when to let go). In the past the skill was to lead when leader know – the skill for today and the future in VUCA times is to lead when leaders do not know, and how and when to follow those led.
Leadership needs to move from 1.0 (leading downwards) through 2.0 (leading sideways cross functional boundaries and outwards) to 3.0 (leading upwards and being able to follow those led). When these combine leadership 4.0 sees it becoming a dynamic leading to faster more agile innovation, better results for less stress and resource.
